The canonical rocket design model: component tree, shapes, materials, mass properties, stages and configurations, and design checks.

Guide: The design tree, Shapes and Mass properties: the models, their sources, how well they are validated and what they leave out.

  • mass: mass, center of mass and full inertia tensor, and how bodies combine.
  • shapes: nose cone and transition profiles.
  • solids: solids of revolution, filled or with a wall.
  • finish: surface finishes and their roughness heights.
  • fins: fin sets (trapezoidal, elliptical, freeform) and tube fins.
  • parts: every other component, from body tubes to shock cords.
  • material: materials and their densities, and materials: built-in values with sources.
  • tree: the design tree of stages and components, placement, automatic radii, overrides and the reference diameter.
  • config: motor mounts, configurations, and the rocket’s mass properties through the burn.
  • checks: structural checks with typed findings.

Modules§

checks
Structural design checks: typed findings about a design that resolves but can’t be built or flown as described.
config
Motor mounts, configurations and the assembled rocket: the structure with its motors placed, and its mass properties through the burn.
error
Error types for the design model.
finish
Surface finishes: the roughness height that limits a surface’s skin friction.
fins
Fin sets and tube fins: planforms, cross-sections, tabs, and mass properties from geometry.
mass
Rigid-body mass properties: mass, center of mass and the full inertia tensor, and how bodies combine, move and turn.
material
Materials: a name and a density per volume, per area or per length.
materials
Built-in materials, each with the public source its density comes from.
parts
Components other than fins: nose cones, body tubes, transitions, inner tubes, centering rings and bulkheads, launch lugs, rail buttons, mass components, parachutes, streamers and shock cords, each with its mass properties from geometry.
shapes
Nose cone and transition profiles: radius and slope along the axis for every shape.
solids
Solids of revolution: volume, centroid, moments of inertia and surface areas of a profile swept about its axis, either filled or as a wall of constant thickness normal to the outer surface.
tree
The design tree: a rocket of stages, each a stack of body components from the nose aft with parts attached to them, and how the tree resolves into placed parts and the rocket’s structural mass properties.
